Today was another of those unique events – Yelverton Rotary Club’s annual Sport and Craft Play Day.
Staged on the old Yelverton airfield, now part of the moorland between Yelverton and Buckland Monochorum, this was the perfect opportunity for local children to join in the fun and try fencing , archery, badminton , cricket, golf and many other sports – alongside displays from other local organisations including Devon Wildlife Trust and Tavistock Scrapstore.
There was a constant turnover of youngsters from four to sixteen, with some parents joining in, from the opening at 10am to closing at 3pm, many of whom returned for several turns with us at archery and fencing.
We were interrupted by some curious commoner’s sheep and a moorland pony, interrupted by rain briefly only twice, the expected deluge failed to arrive and the ground conditions were dry.
We’ll be back with our next event as part of OCRA’s holiday programme with Family Fencing and Archery on Friday 23 August.
