HEMA class

NEW! Historical swordplay class, 7 September 2017

HEMA classOur historical combat class (safe, non-contact) for adults is confirmed starting Thursday September 7th at 8pm in Okehampton. Venue:

Baptist Church Hall,
Fore Street,
Okehampton
EX20 1AN

Please note this is the study of historical combat techniques in a safe, non-contact, it is NOT re-enactment, stage combat, LARP or other role-playing. Please see our post ‘What is HEMA’ for further information. Safe training and sparring is our primary concern. See our post: HEMA – is it safe?

We will be studying and applying techniques from historical manuals; the class will be no more demanding than a moderate physical exercise class; size, strength or agility are not limiting factors for this beginners’ class.

Light protective equipment (fencing jackets, masks, gloves, chest protectors and arm-guards) will be provided for use in class.

We will not be running full-contact sparring sessions during this course.

The format for the September class is outlined as a 6-week course, consisting of five taster sessions (probably in this order):

  • longsword
  • rapier
  • sword and buckler
  • medieval dagger
  • quarterstaff
  • and a group choice of weapon to finish week for 6.

The cost is £36 for 6 weeks.

Depending on takeup, we would then like to run a weekly club session as a regular gathering for more advanced lessons and full sparring.
